Mentor

“So Moses arose with Joshua his servant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God” (Exodus 24:13).

Our church has been blessed with three college students who are leading our Student Ministry on an interim basis.  These three young men are being trained for ministry through academic studies at one of our Baptist Colleges, serving in our church, and most importantly the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.  As their pastor I have the responsibility to mentor them in truth. There is joy in spending time with them, teaching them, listening to their passion and creativity, and watching them work in Kingdom ministry.  Today they will be leading both worship services.  I know the service will be different in some ways.  That is because they are leading.  They are not to be clones of those of us who are current leaders.  They are to use their gifts, talents, and personalities to the glory of God.  God will use them as they submit themselves to His Spirit.

Moses was Joshua’s mentor.  His role was to take Joshua along and teach him by example.  Joshua would be Moses’ successor.  It would be Joshua who would take the Israelites into the Promise Land under the leadership of the Lord.

There is no doubt Moses was very busy in his role as the leader of Israel at the time.  But he took time to mentor young Joshua.  Just think what would happen if Christians followed Moses’ example. Think what would happen if the Joshua’s then took time to mentor another believer.  Do you know how long it would take to impact the population of the world?

I was recently shown this chart that reveals how the entire world could be reached in one generation if one believer would mentor one believer for one year.  The next year both believers would mentor two more believers and that went on in faithfulness.  Look what would happen:

First year = 2
2 years = 4
4 years = 16
6 years = 64
8 years = 256
10 years = 1024
12 years = 4,096
13 years = 8,192
20 years = 1,048,576
30 years = 1,073,741,824
32 years = 4,294,967,296
33 years = 8,589,934,592

This is more than the current world population that could be reached in less than a generation!  But I has to start with one!  Will you be one?

Today is December 30.  May we all seek to mentor one person in their walk with Jesus!

Blessings,

Jim
