The Greater Work
“And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.” (Hebrews 10:11-12).
The sacrifices at the Brazen Altar of the Tabernacle were offered on a daily basis. The priest would stand daily on the grated ledge working diligently. It was tiring work as animal after animal would be slaughtered, hoisted up on the Brazen Altar, made sure it was totally consumed, and managing all of the other details. Each sacrifice was a reminder of how serious sin was but could “never take away sins.”
There are glorious differences between what took place at the Brazen Altar and what took place at the cross. The Lord Jesus did not offer many sacrifices. He offered just One; Himself. Once that offering was complete, He entered into Heaven where He sat down. The reason He sat down is because there is no need for any more sacrifices. The work is finished. His work on the cross was not for the remembrance of sin, it was for the remission of sin. Remission means to “send away.” The work of redemption is complete in Christ. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:12). Hallelujah! Jesus saves to the uttermost! There is the Good News!
The words of William Cowper tell the story:
“There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
Lose all their guilty stains, lose all their guilty stains;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.”
Today is February 29. Take the plunge beneath that flood!
Blessings,
Jim
