The Witness of the Spirit
“The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.” (Romans 8:16)
Does the Spirit Himself bear witness with your spirit that you are a child of God? How does the Spirit bear witness? The Scripture points to several ways.
He reveals unto the believer truth, “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13). We live in such a relevant age today. Our culture may have a problem with absolute truth, but the Spirit of God is all about truth because He is truth and leads the children of God in truth.
The Spirit teaches us the Word of God wherein truth is discovered. “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God.” (1 Cor 2:12). The LORD has no desire for His children to remain ignorant to the things concerning Him. Therefore, He has given us His Spirit that we may understand and know the things pertaining to Him. “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.” (1 Cor 2:14).
The Spirit convicts the believer of sin that we might walk in righteousness. “No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” (1 John 3:9). Born again believers can find ourselves in sin but the Spirit who abides in us will not allow us to enjoy sin.
These are only three ways the Spirit of God testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. There are others that time and space will not allow us to set forth for this brief devotion. For today, do you desire truth? Does the Spirit give you understanding of the Word of God? Does He convict your spirit over sin? Offer God praise if these be true in your life. Examine carefully if your life is absent of these things.
Today is May 28. The Spirit bears witness if we truly belong to Him.
Blessings,
Jim
