Empty Baskets

“And there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.”  (Luke 9:17)

Spiritual seeds come from a variety of places.  Most come from children of the LORD who speak things concerning the Word, ways, and will of the LORD.  We have those occasions often if we are attentive.  Take the above verse.  I had a friend come into my office yesterday and asked me to consider the twelve empty baskets that were filled following Jesus’ feeding of the five thousand.  There will be a full blown sermon come from this some day.  But for now, let’s consider the devotional thought.  One little boy brought a personal lunch of five loaves and two fishes with which Jesus fed everyone on that hillside.  But who brought the “empty baskets” that were filled from the leftovers?  Why did they bring the “empty baskets”?  It seems there were some who came expecting to gain a blessing from the Blesser so they brought their “empty baskets.”  And what are the only kind of baskets that Jesus fills?  “Empty baskets!”  We cannot be filled if we do not expect.  We cannot be filled if we are full of ourselves.  What are we expecting from the LORD today?  Are we expecting to see Him at work?  Are we  expecting to join Him in His work?  We will never experience Him if we  do not expect Him.  We will never expect Him as long as we are full of ourselves.

Today is August 26.  Only “empty baskets” can be filled.

Blessings,

Jim
